Local Area

Penina Golf Resort Hotel, 60 km from Faro, 5 km from Portimão and 12 km from the historic seaside town of Lagos which is a small size town with outdoor dining, a waterfront area, and many bars and restaurant. The town of Alvor is just minutes away from the hotel, and quaint shops, beautiful 16th-century parish churches, and a lively casino await your discovery. The beach is four kilometres away from the hotel (with complimentary transfers from June - September).

Travel/Weather

This hotel has a magnificent location, just one hour’s drive from Faro International Airport and midway between the traditional fishing port of Portimão and the historic town of Lagos.

Penina PGA Professionals:

José Lourenço is from Portugal and has been teaching the game of golf at Penina for the last 35 years. In his early career, José had the privilege to be Sir Henry Cotton's assistant for six years.

His credentials include working with several golf professionals such as Mr Dick Greenway, Peter Jones, Howard Bennett and Peter Dawson (Ryder Cup Player). In 1991 he was awarded Teaching Professional of the Year by Algarve Golf.

José Marcelino had the pleasure of being Sir Henry Cotton's assistant in 1971 and turned professional in 1983. He has been a PGA Professional at Penina Golf Academy since 1991, successfully dominating ultimate golf techniques. Marcelino played in several professional events including the Portuguese Opens, the Portuguese professional golf circuit and several ProAms. He is fluent in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish speaks a little Italian.

Bart van der Wind is from Holland (Haarlem). He started playing golf when he was 20 and turned pro when he was 22. After providing tuition lessons and clinics, Bart decided to dedicate his efforts to one area of the game and began specializing as a putting coach. In 2007, Bart attended the Accredited Instructor Level 1 course., and by 2008 he was one of the first professionals to complete Level 2 in Southport. In March 2008 he launched, in conjunction with Yes! Golf Europe, a specialist putting centre in Eindhoven.

Bart's golf tuition and clinics, offers players a personal fitting of their equipment, in turn improving their putting stroke. Lessons can be presented in Dutch, German and English.

The Penguin Village

Le Meridien Penina is a family friendly resort in West Algarve, with entertainment and family shows in Sagres buffet restaurant most evenings, a free shuttle to the beach club, a 9 hole Academy and professional instruction for beginners.

The Penguin Village is the kids club at Le Meridien Penina for children aged up to 12 years. A mix of supervised games, free play and sports and is available on a seasonal basis, from April-October and through Christmas.

Children Aged 3-12 enjoy free entrance to Penguin Village. Children aged 6 months - 2 years: €45 per day including lunch, afternoon snack, water, fruit juice and sun lotion.

Penina Championship

Par: 73 Length: 6273m Course designer: Henry Cotton Venue: Portuguese Open

The 18-hole Penina Championship Course features holes which are crossed and flanked by a series of streams, ditches and water hazards, demanding precisely executed shots. The course is beautifully maintained, winding past tall stands of eucalyptus and clumps of palms to mainly elevated greens which have subtle slopes and sometimes treacherous speeds. The memorable par-three 13th has been voted one of the best 500 holes in the world and requires a long carry over water to a green guarded by sand. The course is characterised by an unusual grouping of the par-5's, with four of the five arranged together in pairs at the beginning and end of the back nine producing a par of 38 as opposed to 35 for the front nine. Penina also offers a 1,850m nine-hole par-30 Academy Course for players to sharpen their skills on before or after their rounds on the Resort and Championship courses!

Penina Resort

Par: 71 Length: 5964m Course designer: Henry Cotton

Penina’s Resort Course is a strategically demanding 9-hole course with 18 tees designed along the same principles as the Penina Championship course. The course features a number of lakes and sand hazards making it an enjoyable course that tests the skills of all abilities. Holes 1, 2 and 3 are all tree-lined dogleg par 4's where keeping to the fairway is a definite advantage. The only par-5 is the 499m 5th hole, long and straight with an elevated green, a typical Penina feature. The par 4 6th hole, with out of bounds to the right, requires a precise drive through a narrow avenue of tall trees, whereas the drive on the dogleg 7th needs to be a controlled draw followed by an approach steered left of a greenside lake that is too close to the green for comfort. A long par 3 with many bunkers and a long par 4 finish this pleasant course. Penina Golf Resort also offers a 1,850m nine-hole par-30 Academy Course for players to sharpen their skills on before or after their rounds on the Resort and Championship courses!
